Cameron Highlands Hiking Guide Malaysia

Cameron Highlands

Initially described as an escape for the British, it's now so much more.

This is the first thing I will tell you... It is absolutely pertinent to download maps.me. and download all of Malaysia (will come in handy later for the Perhentians).

We took the trail 10 to trail 6, which backs up to the Bharat Tea Plantation. You can also bust to the trail 6 from the road if you tell the taxi to take you there. Sometimes it is blocked by guards so (bribe) just plan to take the longer trail. You will be joined by a friendly dog who will walk you to the top of the mountain, but from there it becomes more perilous and he lets you go on your own. IF you have not hiked or can't follow unmarked, rarely used trails this is NOT for you and take a taxi to the 6 trail at the back of the Bharat group employee housing area to enter and get your shots, otherwise it is VERY TOUGH for non-experienced hikers.

Trail 4 to Parit Falls is one of the easier routes as well, but in my opinion not worth it. Only hardcore hikers with excellent knowledge should attempt Trail 1 (from the summit down) and Trail 8, but again walking through a tea plantation in perfect weather is worth it...

Once you walk up to the viewing center you have to have the tea and cakes. Order all of them as there is only restaurant in this town worth your time, and they open when they want.

Singh Chapati. Okay there is a couple questions about my choice as "best curry ever." But having people say in London that a certain restaurant is the best curry in the world, having people in India saying this is the best, and then I pop into this small family run spot and literally I couldn't stop eating, gives you some respect for what they do. Many people give bad ratings because the service is not good at all, but to be honest, you are in a backwater town where the guy makes curries with fresh ingredients to order. Is it life changing for you? Maybe. if it the best in the world?  Maybe? The lamb curry, cheese curd curry, and the chicken were almost the best I've ever had. If you make it here, its worth it.

This is not an easy place to get to and stomach it. The bus from KL is tough and has many turns. When you get here, it has the feel of being in small town America, but with more diversity. It is very safe to walk around and explore. You can go to the strawberry farm, which is cool, but its more an experimentation for what they can grow there. The night market is small, and if you stay in Tanah Rata (which I highly recommend), then you won't need a car and can take taxis.

WARNING: If you go on a holiday weekend, things get VERY expensive and difficult to book. If it is an election year, holidays come out of nowhere, and are new to even locals. That being said, book ahead, because Malaysian love this area, and there are very few places to stay.

Special fun fact: famous designer Jim Thompson, whose house you can visit in Bangkok "disappeared" in Cameron Highlands. No  person saw him or knows where he went here.
